"Direct & Dominate: Absolute Units" is a fan-made 3D animated web series created by Benjamin Tay, a former animator at Lemon Sky Studios who also contributed to the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection.
The series is a parody set in the universe of the classic real-time strategy game Command & Conquer, specifically during the First Tiberium War era. It features cartoonish, "chibi"-style versions of the game's units—often depicted as petite or chunky—and focuses on the humorous misadventures of sentient military vehicles and robots from the rival factions, the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the Brotherhood of Nod.
The story primarily follows a GDI scouting party, including characters like Pathfinder (a cheerful Humvee), Packer (a no-nonsense APC), and Highlander (a Scottish-accented medium tank from the S.H.A.R.D. subfaction—Special Hit and Run Division). Their antics often involve encounters with Nod forces, such as a Tiberium harvester named Paycheck, and explore lighthearted scenarios within the otherwise grim Command & Conquer setting. The series has been likened to Red vs. Blue for its comedic take on a well-known gaming universe.
Launched with its first episode on May 28, 2020, "Absolute Units" evolved from an earlier comic flash game by Tay called Direct & Dominate: Munitions Dawn (released in 2012 on Newgrounds). The animation has gained a following within the Command & Conquer community for its high production quality and creative spin on familiar units. New episodes and shorts are released irregularly on Tay’s YouTube channel, "Direct and Dominate," supported by a community of fans and artists. As of late 2023, at least eight episodes had been released, with additional side content like character-focused shorts.
The series isn’t officially tied to Electronic Arts (EA), the owners of the Command & Conquer IP, but stands as a passion project showcasing Tay’s animation skills and love for the franchise. It’s a delightful mix of nostalgia, humor, and absurdity for fans of the original games.
